At a Long Island Middle School, a Course in What Unites and Divides

Students at Jericho Middle School in New York are taking a “diversity” class.  The class isn’t traditional in the sense of tests and homework, but rather encourages discussion to promote unity and understanding among different types of people.


This program promotes a deeper meaning than simply educational matters.  It is promoting social understanding at a time when kids are very vulnerable to prejudice.  This program is a good idea and could benefit students in many schools.

This is a very responsible practice, and something that should be implemented in more schools throughout the nation.  It is essential that students learn about other backgrounds and cultures, and be able to experience discussion regarding differences they notice.
